Artist Statement
My desire to photograph flowers began after spending time in my own gardens, cultivating, nurturing, and watching them grow as well as experiencing the beauty of flowers in other gardens. Wanting to get to know flowers more intimately, my journey into macro floral photography began.
Before picking up my camera, I spend time observing flowers searching for subjects whose unique features capture my attention and through my lens, I discover the hidden details that would otherwise go unnoticed. Slowing down and immersing myself in my subject, quiets my mind allowing me to discover and bring the unique features and stories of each flower to life.
I create photographs that not only capture the visual beauty of flowers but also convey the emotional connections I feel towards them.
I invite you to view my Gallery of floral images to experience their visual beauty and to discover your own stories and personal connection to them.
Biography
Deborah Stevenson, became a fine art floral photographer after retiring from a teaching career in Elementary Education and relocating to Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Deborah relentlessly honed her craft in floral photography in her own gardens and across the United States. She started taking online and in-person workshops and conferences which led her to learn and use Lensbaby lenses which completely transformed her approach to photography.
Inspired and taught by floral photographers Kathleen Clemons and Anne Belmont, she began incorporating Lensbaby lenses into her photography, developing skills to create more painterly and artistic images that add depth and emotion to her floral photos.
In 2019, Deborah's commitment to learning earned her a one-year photography scholarship through Sullivan J Photography, motivating her to delve deeper into post-processing techniques using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance her floral images.
Deborah has received multiple awards through juried exhibitions, the first one at the 2019 Philadelphia Flower show which was followed by several years of first-place awards including Best in Show in 2024 at the Xpose Juried Photography Exhibit in New Jersey.
